Categories of Positions
Three types of job openings. Many UN organizations follow personnel categories employed across the United Nations system.
- International Professional Staff
Staff members in the Professional and higher categories are recruited internationally and are paid on the basis of salary scales applied worldwide. Staff recruited under this category usually work as Head of Units in different functional areas such as Program and Project Management, Supply Chain, Information Management, Administration and Finance, Human Resource Management, Information Technology and other areas. The Professional and higher categories comprise five Professional grades (P-1 to P-5). - National Professional Officers
NPOs are employed by some organizations to perform professional duties that require knowledge and experience at the national level and so cannot be carried out as effectively by internationally recruited staff. The job classification standard is very broad, however, NO-A to NO-D grades are very common. - General Services
General Service roles include administrative, secretarial and clerical support as well as specialized positions such as building maintenance. These positions are crucial the smooth operation of the organization as a whole. The higher the level of the job, the more complex the functions become. Job grades from GS-1 to GS-7 are quite common among many UN organizations.

Evaluation of the application

Assessment exercise
The assessment activity could be a written exam, a simulation exercise, or a case study. The time, type, and length of the assessment will be communicated to you ahead of time.
Competency-based interview
The competency-based interview can be conducted over the phone, by video conference, or in person. The time, duration, mode of transportation, and/or location of the interview will be communicated to you in advance.
